Caravaca de La Cruz has approx. 25 000 inhabitants (2017). In 1998 the city was declared a sacred city by the pope and is then the fifth together with Santiago de Compostela, Santo Toribio de Liébana, Rome and Jerusalem. Every 7 years there is a major religious celebration (celebrated in 2017).
The legend tells of a miracle that occurred in the year 1232. Two angels brought a special double cross which they placed on the altar before start of a service. Later at this place, the La Basilica de la Vera Cruz Chapel was erected. It is famous for its grand entrance in red marble. Every year in May there is a great celebration of the special cross. Today, Caravaca de la Cruz is Spain’s third most important pilgrimage because of the cross.
When visiting Caravaca de la Cruz you can also visit El Morino del Rio.
